More Than Just a Gift (Card)

Gift cards are so convenient to buy and send, and hey, who doesn’t love free money? It’s hard to get through any store without seeing a display or endcap of gift cards presented in neat little rows of familiar brands. As a recipient though, it can be a little tricky. Sometimes it can come across as less personal and if it’s a store you don’t frequent, well, then you are forced to think of ways to the spend the money. I agree, it’s first world problems; but to add to it, let’s not forget, the toils of having to remember to use it, spending more than the gift card amount for the nuisance of avoiding leftover funds or losing the card itself. But how can we make a gift card more personal? I immediately think of a lagniappe (pronounced LAN-YAP). It’s a word used in New Orleans to mean “a little extra”. For example, when you get a “bakers dozen” (13 items instead of 12), that extra bagel or pastry would be considered a lagniappe. My family likes to add lagniappes to Christmas gifts—something a little extra to the main gift. So in gifting DONO, why not add a little lagniappe to make it more personal? Here are some ideas that I’ve categorized into our five senses:

A personalized message along with a personalized lagniappe (although optional, you are so much cooler for knowing what that is!) is a gift that you can send that is sure to please.
